Carmen Souza

London, England
Jazz – Capo Verde, Afro-Lusophone
Carmen Souza was born in Lisbon to parents from Cape Verde. Creole, the Cape Verde dialect, and Portuguese surrounded her growing up as did the religion and culture of her parents.

In her teens she sang professionally in a Lusophone Gospel Choir. Carmen sees music as a mission and feels privileged to have the opportunity to express herself through it. Musicians Luis Morais, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarret, and Diana Krall all inspire her artistic evolution. Theo Pas’cal – bass player, producer and mentor – discovered Carmen’s talent and introduced her to jazz, fusion and other contemporary sounds that added to her musical development.
