Toubab Krewe
/toubabkrewe.com
"Asheville, N.C., may not seem like a stronghold for African-rooted music, but Toubab Krewe has soaked up the patterns and rhythms of music from Mali, Zimbabwe, Congo, Brazil and the Caribbean and added a hint of Jerry Garcia's legato guitar. One guitarist doubled on Malian instruments - kora and ngoni - and two drummers played interludes of planned unison rhythms like a Brazilian sambareggae percussion unit. Instead of free-form, jam-band leads, the guitarists expanded the songs with African-style patterns, circling and subtly shifting. The six-beat grooves sneaked up on listeners but then they took hold; midway through one song, two, then four, then dozens of dancers were suddenly bobbing to the music." ~ review of Bonnaroo Music Festival (Manchester, Tennessee) by Jon Pareles, The New York Times
Since forming in 2005, this magnetic instrumental quintet from North Carolina has been credited with bridging the gap between West African and American music unlike any group before them, quickly winning a diverse and devoted following at festivals such as Bonnaroo and Voodoo festivals; and venues including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Their live shows and self-titled debut album have won international acclaim from the New York Times, Global Rhythm, fRoots, NPR and more.
The members of Toubab Krewe developed their unique sound over the course of numerous extended trips to Mali, Guinea, and Ivory Coast, where they immersed themselves in the local culture and studied and performed with luminaries such as Lamine Soumano, Vieux Kante, Madou Dembele and Koungbanan Conde. In 2007 the band played at the the legendary Festival of the Desert in Essakane, Mali, known as the most remote festival in the world. The band is finishing up its new album with Grammy winning producer Steven Heller.
This marks their second appearance in Toronto, having opened for Toots & The Maytals in 2007.
Toubab Krewe is:
Teal Brown: drums
Drew Heller: electric guitar, soku
Justin Perkins: kamel ngoni, kora & electric guitar
David Pransky: electric bass
Luke Quaranta: percussion
