David Buchbinder's Odessa/Havana is the acclaimed Jewish/Cuban jazz powerhouse which fuses the edgy energy of klezmer with the fiery heat of Afro-Cuban rhythms. Trumpeter Buchbinder and piano maestro Hilario Duran (who each composed half of the music), have managed to create that rarest of commodities: an original sound. Odessa/Havana displays a unique musical alchemy with their impeccable playing and agility. The result is ".terrifically exciting, hard-swinging fireworks." ~ Wire Magazine.
Founded just two years ago, the group has been playing to sold-out houses across North America, while receiving outstanding press around the globe for its debut CD - "...an absolute cooker" ~ LA Times, "...hot stuff" ~ Midwest Record, "...completely irresistible" ~ Buffalo News, ".a glorious delight" ~ Irish Times, ".utterly brilliant" ~ (allmusic.com)
Pianist Marilyn Lerner adds her own brand of ivory magic to the mix for this performance, along with Israeli vocal sensation Daddo. A native of Acre, a town on the Israeli/Lebanese border known for peace between Jews and Arabs, this powerful voice breathes new life to the diverse musical and ethnic heritage of her homeland. Known for singing in Ladino (a Hispanic dialect with a rich tradition spoken in Mediterranean Jewish communities until the mid 20th century) Daddo also sings in French, Italian, Spanish, Hebrew and Arabic. This remarkable collaboration is Daddo's final appearance on her first Canadian tour.
