North Africa stretches from the Mediterranean to the southern boundary of the Sahara desert, and consists of the countries of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan and Egypt. The Maghreb region contains the largest population of Muslims in Africa, whom share the written language of Arabic with its different spoken dialects. The Maghreb Project is a new initiative curated by Batuki Music Society that explores cross-cultural and cross-genre music practices from North Africa.

Dancer Rania Farag was born in Cairo to Egyptian and Sudanese parents. She has studied Egyptian dance at Arabesque Canada for over 10 years and performs extensively with the Arabesque Folklore Troupe.

Batuki Music Society gratefully acknowledges support from the Ontario Arts Council - Conseil des arts de l'Ontario, Canadian Heritage, Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des Arts du Canada, Toronto Arts Council, Government of Canada and CIUT 89.5 FM. We are grateful for the generous contribution and support from Harbourfront Centre, the festival co-producer.
