On September 18 debut self-titled EP at Hugh’s Room in association with the Ashkenaz Foundation and Small World Music.

The Toronto-based six-piece has been a welcome blast of energy to Toronto’s established Flamenco and Jewish communities over the past two years—both herald the young troupe as a fresh, uniquely “Toronto” take on their respective traditions.

“This city doesn’t limit itself to one tradition, so why should we?” says Tamar Ilana, Ventanas’
lead vocalist and co-founder. “People hear familiar melodies and rhythms in strange and
surprising contexts and they really respond to that—It’s what Toronto is all about to us.”

Fresh off a Canadian Tour that saw the band perform at a variety of festivals and concert venues from Winnipeg to Victoria, Ventanas is excited to return for their home town release and come not only with a new recording, but fresh takes on traditional Sephardic, Turkish, Balkan, and Flamenco songs inspired by their travels in Western Canada.

“Toronto is a beautiful, dynamic city; Canada is a beautiful, dynamic country—the whole world
in one place,” adds Ilana. “That’s what we try to express in our music.”

With support from the Ashkenaz Foundation, the Koffler Centre for the Arts, and Small World Music, and an impressive list of guest artists including members of guerrilla-folk partypunks Lemon Bucket Orkestra and Juno-nominated Jaffa Road, the September 18 sure to attract a diverse, attentive audience ready to be taken “back home” or to some strange exotic place, whatever the case may be.
