Fanfare Ciocarlia

Zece Prajini, Romania
Traditional Balkan/Gypsy Brassband
Fanfare Ciocarlia is one of the world’s greatest live bands. A feisty ensemble from a small village in Romania, they started out as a loose assemblage of musicians playing weddings and baptisms. As Romania opened up to the world, they were discovered in 1996. Since then, they’ve played over 1000 concerts in over 50 countries!

Fanfare Ciocarlia learned the craft at the feet of their fathers and grandfathers. They keep the spirit of Gypsy music traditions alive. Historically rooted in Austrian and Turkish military bands, Fanfare Ciocărlia’s instrumental lineup includes trumpets, tenor and baritone horns, tubas, clarinets, saxophones, bass drum and percussion. Their lyrics are usually in Romani or Romanian and their music usually stems from Romani and Romanian folk dance traditions. Not limited by these stylistic borders, they also borrow freely from Turkish, Bulgarian, Serbian and Macedonian musical genres. Adding to their rollicking party sound they’re also known to break out into international classics – from Hollywood to Bollywood.

With fans from Melbourne to Memphis, this beloved balkan gypsy band has hooked audiences with their breakneck speeds, high-energy performances, careening rhythms, and wild soloing full of unforgettable Fanfare Ciocarlia sounds.
