Samir Chatterjee is a world-renowned virtuoso Tabla player, composer and teacher from India. He travels widely across the world performing as a soloist or alongside other outstanding musicians. Chatterjee began his education from an early age, and has studied with a number of masters such as Pandit Bankim Gosh, Pandit Amalesh Chatterjee and Pandit Shyamal Bose. All of his teachers have been from the Farrukhabad Gharana school of Tabla-playing, which he now represents. Chaterjee’s impressive catalogue of collaborations includes performing alongside Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan, Shujat Khan, and Anoushka Shankar, to name only a few. A resident of New York, Samir has been a catalyst in the fusion of Indian and non-Indian music, and has performed with diverse plethora of remarkable musicians such as Brandford Marsalis, Ravi Coltrane, Kayhan Kalhor, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, DJ Logic, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Alicia Keys, Sting and Annie Lennox among many others. He has authored a comprehensive book entitled ‘A Study of Tabla’ and a guidebook to Indian music titled ‘Music of India’. He is on the faculty at Yale University, Manhattan School of Music, University of Pittsburgh, New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and University of Bridgeport in CT. Since 2008, Samir has been working relentlessly towards the musical revival of Afghanistan, working with different levels of society and administration, and has already made a significant contribution to the cultural life of the country. He is the Founder-Director of CHHANDAYAN, an organization dedicated to promoting and preserving Indian music and culture.
