The coming together of different cultures is part of our city’s everyday reality, but the way The Silk Road Ensemble embodies that idea, and demonstrates how those cultures are, and can be, connected, is extremely rare.

The group, led by celebrated cellist, Yo-Yo Ma, unites musicians and traditions from more than twenty countries along the Silk Road – and beyond. Toronto audiences are doubly-blessed for this year’s visit from the Ensemble: TIFF will host the world premiere of The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. The film, by acclaimed and award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), follows the band over several years and many borders in their quest to teach, collaborate and perform.Members include Chinese-born pipa (Chinese lute) master Wu Man; “one of the living masters of the gaita” (Galacian bagpipes), Cristina Pato; Iranian kamancheh (stringed bowed instrument) virtuoso and composer Kayhan Kalhor; the TSO’s own bassist, Jeffrey Beecher; and more.Performing a combination of new arrangements of traditional music and new commissions, The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma’s Massey Hall debut on September 15 will bring the ancient trade route to life.Read more about the Silk Road Ensemble at soundboard.ca.
