Small World’s 18th Annual Asian Music Series presents the Toronto debut of a remarkable group that breaks down walls between the cultures of jazz and Indian classical music. LA-based singer Aditya Prakash performs music that is free from genre. By peaking the common language of improvisation and creating work that uniquely blends Indian ragas and rhythms with jazz’s rich harmonic structure, the group seeks to illuminate the transcendental nature of music.
Now entering its second decade, Prakash draws his inspiration to experiment with Indian classical music from his close musical collaborations and performances with Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar, Karsh Kale, and acclaimed choreographer, Akram Khan. The roots of the Ensemble’s collaboration started as UCLA friends jamming, where horizons to cross-cultural musical interaction expanded vastly. The resulting sound frames Prakash’s distinctive vocal style with jazz, funk, and hip-hop to create a wholly original, genre-melding sound.
'Aditya represents a new generation of musician. He has studied his traditional craft extensively but is not afraid to take that language and art form into uncharted territories' – Karsh Kale
