We channel the transformative power of music to drive social change and representation of diverse cultures. We do this by creating opportunities for underrepresented artists alongside engaging audiences and industry professionals. Powered by SWM team and partners, our programming includes a music series, festival, industry and artist training and curatorial offerings.

Salary range: 75,000 - 80,000

OPPORTUNITY & CANDIDATE PROFILE
Small World Music is seeking an experienced Director to lead our programming department and a dynamic team of fulltime and contract personnel. This role includes oversight of the Programming, Production, across department collaboration and operational activities. The ideal candidate is a strategic leader with a deep passion for cultural equity and diversity in the music industry. They possess extensive experience in cultural music programming, project management, and stakeholder engagement, ideally within the arts or music sector. They have a proven track record of supervising a diverse team of varying professional expertise to meet program deliverables. They excel in collaborating across departments for strategic planning, budget management, and resource optimization. They are committed to fostering inclusive environments, building and stewarding relationships with artists, partners, and community stakeholders to enhance programming visibility and impact.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Leadership & Collaborative Development:
- Cultural Equity Programming: Function as Executive Producer on all major projects managing
- production and programming teams. Leverage knowledge of global music trends, artists network, and cultural developments to innovate and present/co-produce music program concepts, genres, formats, and artistic collaborations. .
- Cross Department Collaboration: Engage departments (marketing, production, operations, finance) to co-create implementation for program development, execution, evaluation and reporting.
- Strategic Program Planning: Develop and align programming deliverables to meet strategic key performance indicators and stakeholder outcome.
- Communication and Promotion: Collaborate with the marketing team to develop compelling narratives for program promotion, newsletter, community outreach.
Program Implementation & Project Management:
- Lead SWM Signature Programming: Maintain program fidelity of SWM Series, Global Toronto Music, Small World Centre Curatorial and SWM Incubator engaging project stakeholders
- Develop comprehensive project plans outlining scope, timelines, deliverables and resource allocation leveraging project management approaches and application for effective planning, execution and evaluation.
- Oversee the allocation and approval of resources, stakeholder/partnership engagements including venue selection, technical team and support, and artist accommodations and hospitality.
- Collaborate with technical, contract and operational teams to meet logistical and technical requirements
Financial Oversight:
- Lead development of annual department and project budgets in consultation with program and leadership teams
- Oversee approval of project budget expenditures, supervising the team to identify cost optimization, track budget transaction and develop final project budget report
- Collaborate across departments/ teams to identify cost optimization, revenue generation, reconcile project/department budgets, develop and present reports to senior leadership and board of directors.
Evaluation and Data Management:
- Establish key performance processes and indicators (KPIs) for program success and evaluate outcomes
- Implement feedback/ evaluation mechanisms from artists, audiences, and programming stakeholders and utilize data to adjust future programs.
- Develop and present project evaluation data to meet audit, granting, annual reporting requirements including planning documents, budgets, and post-event evaluations.
Community Engagement & Stakeholder Relationship Building:
- Cultivate relationships with artists, presenting/production partners, sponsors, and community stakeholders; harness relationships to enhance programming visibility and impact.
- Establish communication channels to engage underrepresented, marginalized, and emerging artists in programming and advocacy initiatives.
- Represent the organization as speaker, presenter, cultural programming professional in community engagement,
Human Resources & Culture
- Develop strategic workforce initiatives to develop and advance programming department and team
- Oversee department recruitment: job descriptions, candidate interview, onboarding expectations.
- Implement performance monitoring mechanisms to assess department and team achievements.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in Arts Administration, Music, Business, or a related field
- Proven experience in program management, preferably music or arts sector, demonstrating knowledge of global music trends, diverse artists and art forms/genres.
- Advanced project management skills, including the ability to develop comprehensive project plans, manage resources effectively, and deliver successful outcomes.
- Budget management skills, including the ability to develop, manage program budgets, identify cost-saving opportunities, and optimize resource allocation.
- Strategically engage and align programs, partners and resources to organizational goals.
- Track record of successfully leading diverse and cross-functional teams.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts clearly.
- Proficient in community building and conflict resolution, with a focus on maintaining a positive and inclusive work environment.
