Celebrate Orthodox New Year and raise your voice alongside Ukrainian and Georgian vocal groups. A rousing night of polyphony brings together two ancient traditions to welcome a new year.
Featuring: Sing with Ukraine & Máchari
Sing with Ukraine is a grassroots effort by Eastern European artists, started after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. What began as a gathering of friends processing grief together through song, has now become a journey and resistance effort through Toronto’s music venues. They interrupt the pre-scheduled programming to celebrate Ukrainian identity, to show the humanity and culture of those affected, and to awaken ourselves and our city from indifference.
Máchari means “new wine” in Georgian. ‘New' in deference to the old masters who taught them what they sing, and 'wine' in homage to the great Georgian tradition of hospitality and feasting, in which both secular and sacred songs play an essential role. All four members – Alan Gasser, Bie Engelen, Michelangelo Iaffaldano and Emma (So) Whitla– have repeatedly traveled to Georgia to immerse themselves in its music and culture.
The 2023 Small World Music Series is generously supported by TD Bank of Canada, the Government of Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council.
