Offering a rich palette of North American folk fiddle traditions, Portage is an evening of singing, dancing and all sorts of fun. Their sound features lush, unusual fiddle harmonies backed by cello, guitar, piano, and stirring vocals. From the first note, you’re swept into a rhythm-driven maelstrom of folk tradition.

About the Artists
Founded in 2020 with a mandate to bridge Canadian and U.S. traditions, Portage began its journey just as the world locked down. Though physically separated, the group recorded two acclaimed video concerts for Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre and the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention in Ireland by arranging and recording remotely. These sessions explored sets from Appalachia, Newfoundland, Manitoba, New England, and Quebec. In 2023, the ensemble finally gathered in St. John’s to complete their debut self-titled album, Portage, released in spring 2024.

The members of Portage are seasoned artists with successful solo careers and a collective resume that includes working with ensembles such as Cordelia’s Dad, Ensemble Galilei, The Fitzgeralds, and The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. Portage serves as a creative intersection where these veterans share and evolve their traditions. They are thrilled to welcome their newest member, Alanna Jenish, who brings high-energy step-dancing and masterful fiddle and guitar work to the mix.

Portage is:
  • Erynn Marshall (B.C., Virginia)
  • Laura Risk (California, Quebec)
  • Christina Smith (Newfoundland)
  • Anne Lederman (Manitoba, Ontario)
  • Alanna Jenish (Ontario)
