History
Established in 1997, Small World Music Society is a charitable organization that has earned a cherished place within Toronto’s cultural fabric, with a reputation as the city’s premier presenter dedicated to culturally-diverse music. With its commitment to supporting under-served artists and fellow presenters and working hand in hand with diverse community groups, Small World uses music to foster understanding and build bridges.
Since 1997, Small World has presented and partnered on close to 800 concerts and related events in venues ranging from top-tier concert halls to its own venue, and from outdoor festival stages to clubs, across Greater Toronto. The company’s motto – ‘The Beat of the Globe in the Heart of Toronto’, reflects its history - Small World presentations have featured music from across Toronto, Canada, and every corner of the globe – from Mali to Mongolia, from Brazil to Bulgaria. Pride is taken in showcasing a breadth of artists ranging from emerging young musicians to internationally-celebrated stars. As a medium-sized organization at the intersection of community and institution, Small World is uniquely positioned to bring a wealth of sounds to audiences of all kinds.
The annual season of programming is anchored by the Small World Music Festival, which runs for 10 days in late September. It strives to attract and present as wide a musical and cultural scope as possible, in keeping with the company’s mandate to encompass the breadth of global culture. In this capacity, the program has presented dozens of Toronto debuts, given a platform to hundreds of Canadian artists, partnered with most of the key presenters in Greater Toronto and has engaged with tens of thousands of music enthusiasts. The Festival has presented numerous free events in order to build new audiences, whether at Harbourfront Centre, Yonge-Dundas Square, Fort York, or elsewhere.
The Asian Music Series is a unique two-month long celebration of Asian musical culture, coinciding with Asian and South Asian Heritage Month. Working closely with a series of community and presenting partners, the program has won the acclaim of communities and artists and the support of TD Bank.
In 2014, the company took a major step in its growth and community engagement by opening the Small World Centre – a hub for the culturally diverse arts community. Located at Toronto Artscape’s YoungPlace, the 1,000 square foot space features professional staging, state-of-the-art sound and flexible capacity that accommodates 70 people seated, or 100 people standing. The space is an accessible and affordable facility designed as a platform for emerging and underserved artists and communities. It hosts concerts, workshops, panel discussions, rehearsals and multimedia productions that have engaged a wide range of cultural groups and diverse communities. The Centre expands Small World’s support of emerging artists and produces a valuable archive of high-quality audio and video recordings that offer musicians access to valuable promotional collateral, which can be seen at Small World’s YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/SmallWorldMusic
Launched in 2017, Polyphonic Ground is a pioneering organizational initiative designed to support Toronto-area presenters of culturally-diverse music, while fostering an environment where more of their music can enter mainstream awareness. The shared collaborative working model brings together 12 small to medium-sized live music presenters with a shared commitment to showcasing the Toronto area’s international music appeal. Polyphonic Ground’s mission provided points of connection for artists and audiences, business and industry, while encouraging exchange through collaborative programming and professional development initiatives for diverse artistic leaders.
eMERGEnce, Small World’s artist development initiative, brings together a cohort of 26 diverse newcomers, refugee, emerging artists to participate in a series of workshops, mentoring sessions and musical interactions that are designed to offer the knowledge, skills and support to help them succeed. A systematization of the kind of informal work Small World has been doing for many years, the project will have a tangible impact on marginalized and under-represented artists.
Global Toronto is dedicated to moving the music landscape forward, rooted in Toronto, and operating through a global lens. It is a showcase and conference that engages in, grows, and reflects the diversity and excitement of the music sector, and a platform for connecting export-ready artists and professionals from across the country and around the world. A gathering place to dig into the issues and opportunities faced on all sides of the stage, Global Toronto is a space in which relationships can be established and strengthened across the greater sector.
