Internationally-exhibited Toronto-based artist Faye Mullen’s work is a site-specific performance which takes place nightly at sunset for the Breaker, a breakwater at the north west-most point of Ontario Place’s West Island. Exploring the failure implicit in language, Mullen turns to alternate signals which use movement and ritual to suggest new modes of communication and connection reviving archaic gestures. Performed at the edge of the lake this work addresses the moment a walk, collective or individual, becomes a cry. Mullen’s poetic encounter symbolically gathers the breakwater, the horizon, the body to respond to the sea and sky as sites of knowledge and grounds upon which one can be heard.

Biography:
Characterized by a sustained interest in failure, body, materiality and weight, Faye Mullen’s work is informed by a sculptural sensibility combining elements of performance, site, sound, light and image – both moving and still. Faye studied at l’École National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris, at OCAD as well as the University of Toronto where she received her masters. Faye has participated in several international artist residencies including a two-year post-graduate residency Le Fresnoy in Tourcoing, France. Her work has been exhibited internationally in solo and curated group shows in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, the UK and the US. Faye currently situates her practice between Montreal + Toronto.
