About the artist:
Zaheer-Abbas Janmohamed was born in Scarborough, ON and brought up in Calgary, AB, where he began learning tabla at an early age. As a recipient of an Arts Fellowship award from the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, he lived in India from 2005-2006 and 2010-2011 to pursue his study of classical tabla repertoire, and is still a student of Ustad Allarakha’s senior disciple, Shri Prafulla Athalye.

Since returning to Toronto, Janmohamed has become increasingly active in the vibrant local beat-making and producer community. Drawing on diverse cultural and artistic influences and on his classical training, he combines tabla repertoire together with elements of Western styles like hip hop, electronic, jazz, and soul music through the use of samplers and controllers.

Janmohamed preserves the integrity of traditional classical tabla while exploring methods of incorporating it in new and innovative contexts. In doing so, he hopes to contribute to Canada’s multicultural musical landscape and reach diverse audiences in an increasingly connected, collaborative, and “genre-less” musical era. He is a member of the first Cohort of Small World Music’s eMERGEnce program for emerging/newcomer artists.
