While we’re all about introducing new sounds, we also get really excited to join artists at several points along their musical journeys. That’s why we’re psyched to welcome one of our recent faves, Cheikh Ibra Fam, back to Toronto.

If you were lucky enough to join us in early 2023 to catch his last Toronto visit, you already know why you’ll want to be at Drom Taberna on Feb 15 when he brings his Senegalese-rooted funk, soul, RnB, and more back to Toronto.

We could tell you all about his contributions to the legendary and long-running Orchestra Baobab, or his three albums under the names Freestyle. But one of the most exciting elements of his return in 2024 is the Toronto connection: While Cheikh’s border-crossing music exemplifies what makes our cosmopolitan city the musical envy of the world, he’s taken more than just a Torontonian influence for his next phase: He’s hired four of Toronto’s most in-demand musicians to join him onstage: Selcuk Suna (sax), Max Sennit (drums), Waleed Abdulhamid (bass), and Patrick O’Reilly (guitar). Rare is the local band pushing boundaries that doesn’t include one or more of this killer quartet, and Drom and Small World are over the moon to see members of our families lead Toronto music’s most recent foray into the wider world.

About the artist:
Cheikh Ibra Fam is a multidimensional artist whose nearly 15 year career has demonstrated a free and futuristic spirit, well anchored in his Senegalese roots. He introduced his first international album in the Spring of 2022 entitled 'Peace in Africa' for the French record label Soulbeats Music. He is also a singer for Orchestra Baobab, a famous Senegalese Afro-Cuban jazz band. Cheikh is an RFI Talent, part of the Putumayo World Discovery Program and a socially involved artist who has collaborated with the UN Refugee Agency, Association Monégasque Internationale pour L’Art Africain (AMIAA), and Innovation: Africa.

The 2024 Small World Music Series is sponsored by TD Bank Group through the TD Ready Commitment and funded by the Government of Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council.
