Future Routes
Artists and performers from around the globe forge new paths and smash stereotypes while drawing on traditional roots music to create bold and far-out sounds. Get caught up in the rhythms of guitars, sitars and more!
Os Tropies - Fri, July 8 @ 7:00pm, Stage in the Round
Os Tropies grew out of the impossibility of travelling back in time. Influenced by the music of the revolutionary tropicália movement of late 1960s Brazil, these six Canadians versed themselves in psychedelic rock and Brazilian popular music in order to imagine what it was like to be a Brazilian music radical in a time of heavy political turmoil and protest song purism.
Orlando Julius & The Afro Soundz Sat, July 9 @ 9:30pm
Few artists have been more crucial to the invention, development and popularization of afrobeat than Orlando Julius. Starting in the '60s, Julius was fusing traditional African sounds and rhythms with American pop, soul and R&B. Aside from performing and recording in his native Nigeria, Orlando Julius spent many years in the United States working on collaborations with Lamont Dozier, the Crusaders and Hugh Masekela. His 1966 effort, Super Afro Soul helped shape the funk movement that swept over the United States in subsequent years.
Sanskriti Arts - Sun, July 10 @ 3:30pm
Sanskriti Arts is a company that brings together people from all ages and diverse cultural backgrounds through the expressive art form of dance. We strive to create a universal platform where health and wellness can be enhanced through dance, yoga and movement, and where boundaries are dissolved to create cultural inclusion.
