Gloria Gift Nankunda & Violet Re w. beatmap
Gloria Gift Nankunda as her name suggests, was born with a vocal gift. Mentored by a doting grandmother, music became her strength, taking her on life’s journey. Her soulful voice is featured on her debut album, ‘Nankunda’, which contains tales from her rich Ankole heritage in Uganda. Gloria has showcased her Afro folk soul on stages stretching from Boston’s Summer splash 2018 to Canadian Music Week, and Black History Month and African Fashion Week.
Violet Re Is an Indie-rock singer and songwriter, born in a region where music was one of many disciplines that women were discouraged and even barred from using as a form of self-expression. As she puts it, “Despite this, and going against everything I had been told I should do, I dug deep to write lyrics that allowed me to express my feelings. I look at my songs as a cry of anger, and it was only through writing music that I was able to express myself”.
beatmap is the longstanding, seldom seen musical project of Small World founder Alan Davis and his musical friends Neil Gardiner and Sina Momtahan. The band’s explorations are rooted in the sounds of the wider world, filtered through their unique lens. They range from meditative devotions and jazz inflections to rocking beats, using their music to promote a positive message, to move bodies and souls and have fun.
