Audiences of all ages can enjoy a vibrant mix of free and ticketed shows featuring 18 jury-selected musicians spanning diverse genres and cultures. The festival brings together international delegates to exchange ideas and address industry challenges through innovative programming. As advocates for equity, sustainability, and accessibility, GTMF offers a unique opportunity for musical discovery at both indoor and outdoor concerts, thought-provoking discussions, and a celebration of Toronto's rich musical tapestry.
Join us at Lula Lounge on Tuesday October 1, 2024, for a very special showcase lineup, featuring AHI, Salin and Empanadas Ilegales.
About the Artists:
With a voice like “gravel on silk”, JUNO Award and Polaris Prize-nominated songwriter and recording artist AHI (pronounced “eye”) has created a colourful landscape of tightly-crafted lyrics, driving rhythms and catchy melodies, propelling him to the forefront of the international Folk/Roots scene. Independently amassing 100M+ streams on Spotify, and performing on CBS & NPR Tiny Desk, AHI is undeniably one of Canada’s most exciting new voices.
Salin is a Thai-born drummer, Juno nominated producer and composer. Her current sound explores the enchanting sounds of Northeast Thailand and marries it with the 70’s psychedelia of West Africa, all through the lens of a modern soulful production. Through her music, she ponders on themes of identity, spirituality, and humanity (all paired with a dose of fun) to create a unique sonic journey for her listeners.
Empanadas Ilegales create playful songs that put a smile on your lips and hips even as their music is infused with occasional eerie touches of ghostly guitar and discordant horns. The band was destined to be, as the future members kept running into one another at house party jams where they found themselves drawn to each other over and over again. Before coalescing in Vancouver, the musicians traced their roots to Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, and Brazil, meaning their leanings towards layering jazzy textures and sounds punctuated by psychedelic surf over chicha and salsa, come naturally. You will naturally be finding yourself drawn to the dance floor to swing along too.
