The International Indigenous Music Summit (IIMS) is the largest global event solely dedicated to celebrating, creating awareness, sharing resources, and building opportunities for the Indigenous music community. IIMS 2024 will take place June 10-14, 2024 at the TD Music Hall and key performance venues across Toronto. The event will shine a spotlight on over 45 incredible Indigenous artists from around the world, and will feature a traditional welcoming ceremony and feast, opening night Gala, and daytime programming including elder talks, keynotes, B2B networking sessions, master classes and community roundtables.
Join us at TD Music Hall on Thursday, June 13, 2024, for a very special showcase lineup, featuring Joel Maripil, Ellescriv, Alan Syliboy & The Thundermakers, and Matiu.
About the Artists:
Joel Maripil: Joel Maripil is a Mapuche composer and performer (also known as “ülkantufe” or singer-poet) from Kechokawin, a community near Puerto Domínguez on the shores of Lake Budi, Araucanía. He has dedicated his life to the dissemination and transmission of Mapuche Lafkenche culture through ül (singing), not only within Chile but in different corners of the world. Joel has worked as a researcher, compiler and composer, and has also been manager of the Mapuche children ‘s orchestra of Tirúa and Puerto Saavedra.
Ellescriv: Lorissa Scriven’s distinctive brand of earthy folk has its roots deep in the river valleys of northern British Columbia, where she grew steeped in music and wild places. Among the spruce and aspen of her hometown, Taylor BC, this Saulteau Nations woman found songs spontaneously happening inside her as naturally as a river flowing.
Alan Syliboy and The Thundermakers: Alan Syliboy was born and raised in Truro and lives at Millbrook First Nation. He looks to the indigenous Mi’kmaq petroglyph (stone etchings) tradition for inspiration, and has developed his own artistic vocabulary out of these forms.
Alan Syliboy - Group Leader, Spoken Word & Percussionist, Evan Syliboy - Lead Guitar, Lukas Pearce - Bassist, Sound Designer & Video Mapping, Hubert Francis - Vocals & Guitar, Joanne Hatfield - Vocals, Guitar, Flute, Piano & Percussionist, Aaron Prosper- Vocals & Percussionist.
Matiu: Singer/Songwriter Matiu was born in Maliotenam, an Innu community located on Quebec’s North Shore. Adorned with his guitar and surrounded by his exceptional musicians, he presents a folk-blues show in which French and Innu texts intertwine. Matiu tells his story and that of his community through lyrics that deal with daily life, human and family relationships as well as the quest for indigenous identity. With his contagious energy, Matiu offers a show that is both festive and touching, tinged with humour and sensitivity.
