Mashreq Quartet
Combining the talents of four gifted musicians, this new group explores the intersection of Arabic and Persian music. Led by Tarek Ghriri, a Palestinian-Syrian guitarist and composer, the group merges his passion for flamenco music with his Arabic origins to create a unique blend. A member of the Canadian Arabic Orchestra, in 2015, Tarek co-created Music From Hope to use his musical skills to help children who suffer from trauma.
The group also features Padideh Ahrarnejad, who plays tar, the plucked-string instrument central to Persian music. Since emigrating to Toronto, she has become a member of Kuné, Canada's Global Orchestra, organized by the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Two percussionists complete the ensemble: Nour Kaadan was born in Syria and plays classical Middle Eastern percussion and Flamenco rhythms on Cajon. Nour facilitated music therapy workshops in Syrian refugee camps. Ali Massoudi is a master of several percussion instruments who has worked with many famous musicians and ensembles. He has performed internationally with the Tehran Symphony Orchestra and Iran National Music Orchestra.
