Hailed as 'the Bob Dylan of Iran' by the New York Times, he is a true musical maverick who speaks for and touches the souls of today’s youth. With material from his new CD, Trust the Tangerine Peel, Mohsen and his band will bring their unique patchwork blend of Persian classical poetry with rock, blues and jazz that has won him fans around the world.
With the new album, his seventh release, Namjoo takes a further leap into cultural border-blurring with a mix of original and cover songs featuring contemporary and classical poetry juxtaposed over music familiar to Western ears. Original lyrics sung over music by Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin among others marks another bold stroke by an artist known for his iconoclastic approach to his work.
A singer, songwriter, music scholar and setar player, his 2007 release Toranj, mostly produced underground, exploded because of its subversive words and unique fusion of Persian traditions and Western melodies – synthesizing the ancient with the modern. Namjoo’s music broke through all social, cultural, and musical taboos. It also insulted the Islamic regime, which called for his arrest, eventually forcing him into exile. Since then, he has consolidated his place at the forefront of global music, working in film and theatre, while performing on some of the world's most prestigious stages to a growing legion of fans.
