Lula Music and Arts Centre, Batuki Music Society and Small World Music Society are proud to present Angolan Semba master Paulo Flores, performing in Toronto for the first time.
At the forefront of the Kizomba movement for more than fifteen years, Paulo has helped shape the genre’s unique fusion of zouk rhythms from the Antilles with elements from traditions from Congo and Angola.
The voice of Paulo Flores, sweet and warm, vibrant and deep, is inspired by Luanda´s urban tradition and tells us stories of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Also a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN in Angola, Paulo continues to play an important social role in supporting the modernization of the Angolan music through collaboration with young Angolan musicians.
Paulo’s O País Que Nasceu Meu Pai (2013), his latest of more than a dozen CDs, seeks to revive the memory of the time of his parents generation, its dreams, ideals and way of being and thinking.
A huge hit at WOMEX 2014, Flores stop in Toronto is part of a Canada wide tour that includes Nuit D'Afrique, Sunfest, Kultrun and the Vancouver Folk Festival.
DJ Galo will enhance the evening spinning the very best of kizomba, semba and afro-house. (Wednesday night)
Please note that ticket holders on Wednesday night are welcome to join us for a concert by Norwegian a cappella group, Røyst Trio at 7pm.
Kizomba lesson at 8 pm by Afro Latino Dance Company
Concert at 8:30 pm.
Supported by Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Arts Council.
