A Tribute to Pt. Shivkumar Sharma
Presented by the Riyaz Institute of Hindustani Music
In association with Small World Music
Join us for a captivating night of santoor music by Pt. Shivkumar Sharma's senior-most disciple, Dhananjay Daithankar on the santoor, accompanied by Jasmeet Chana on the tabla.
Shivkumar Sharma took the santoor to new heights with his deep knowledge of raga and tala. Carrying on his legacy is Dhananjay Daithankar, hailing from Pune. Jasmeet Chana is Toronto's own tabla virtuoso, a disciple of Ustad Sukhvinder Singh.
Expect a dazzling display of melodic mastery and rhythmic complexity.
About the Artists:
Dhananjay Daithankar is India's preeminent santoor master. A graded by Doordarshan and All India Radio artist, Daithankar has been awarded the Surmani title by Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai, Pune Ki Asha Puraskar by the Asha Foundation, and the Dattopant Daithankar Award for a young artist bestowed by the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav. Over the past three decades, Dhananjay has performed at prominent festivals throughout the world, including in the US, Europe, Singapore, Thailand, and the Middle East.
Jasmeet Chana began his musical journey at the age of twelve by learning both the Tabla and Jori from Ustad Avtarjit Singh Honey Ji, an impeccable Tabla Vadak of the Punjab Gharana (school of music). Currently, Jasmeet has been studying under none other than the legendary Ustad Sukhvinder Singh Pinky Ji of the Punjab and Benaras Gharanas. Jasmeet has toured extensively throughout North America, United Kingdom, and India and currently lives in Brampton, Ontario (Canada) where he also passes on his knowledge to his students.
The 2024 Small World Music Series is sponsored by TD Bank Group through the TD Ready Commitment and funded by the Government of Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council.
