TD SUNFEST ‘16 is a FREE one‐stop travel portal ready to transport patrons to first class destinations around the globe, thanks to more than 30 of the world’s most iconic performers and over 300 evocative food, craft and visual art exhibitors, the festival will continue to offer one of summer’s most immersive cultural experiences.
This year, we are presenting a record number of international headliners, many of them making their Canadian debuts after being recently discovered by Sunfest’s Artistic Director at leading music showcases from Hungary to Mexico. Among the potential stars of TD Sunfest ‘16 are master Galician piper Xosé Manuel Budiño; Cape Verdean singer‐songwriter
Elida Almeida; Paris‐based Mauritanian singer‐songwriter Daby Touré; Chilean band Congreso, described as “a magical carousel that unites indigenous rhythms, contemporary music and jazz harmonies;” and Benin/Finland’s Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble, whose brilliant melding of Afrobeat and jazz has been likened to “Weather Report meets Fela Kuti”.
Government of Ontario's supported theme, AFRIKALIA: African Heart Beats 2016, will feature over a dozen African legends and rising stars. With special attention to performers who hail from the artistically rich islands off the main African continent (e.g., Cape Verde and Réunion), as well as from the African diasporas that have developed in countries like Venezuela and Colombia. Many Afrikalia headliners have amazing back stories; notably, Uganda’s Neema Children's Choir. comprised of child orphans who were taken off the streets and into the healing embraces of song and dance.
