It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the death - and celebrate the life - of Ustad Zakir Hussain - one of the most beloved, influential and visionary musical artists of our time.

Small World was lucky to have had an almost 30-year history with the great Zakir-ji. Over the course of innumerable Toronto presentations, we became part of his unique musical universe. His reputation as a performing artist speaks for itself - but it was his warm generosity of spirit and sense of humour that helped make him the charismatic yet humble star who delighted audiences around the world for decades.

Zakir’s legacy will live on through generations of tabla players and other musicians, as well as fans of Indian and global music.

We were keenly anticipating the great man’s return in April, but alas, the magic hands are silent now.

We offer condolences to his family, friends, musical protégés and fans everywhere.

He will be missed.
