This year's edition of the annual festival is presented in a new format, featuring online events highlighting members of the company’s newcomer artist development program - eMERGEnce. The festival is part of Global Music Month 2020 – an international online initiative taking place throughout the month of September.
Over the weekend, five broadcasts will showcase twelve groups, many assembled specifically for the festival. They will feature newly created works by artists including master ney player Shaho Andalibi, clarinetist Majd Sekkar, percussionists Nour Kaadan and Mari Palhares, singer Ahmed Moneka, cellist Anna Shabalina, knee-fiddle player Marta Sołek, and many more. Examples of the exciting creative projects include The Path – recently arrived from Tehran, Hossein Soleimani (vocal, kamancheh, setar), teams up with singer Violet Reza, Abbas Janmohamed (Tabla) and Daniel Botos (double bass) finding a musical and spiritual route through the multicultural city of Toronto.
In addition, each broadcast will end with a ‘blast from the past’ as we reach into the Small World archive for performances by some of the finest global music artists from previous years. The late, great Oliver Mtukudzi, Calypso Rose, Boban & Marko Marković and more will remind us of the days of sweaty dancing amongst our fellow music lovers!
