An immersive installation by internationally-renowned Canadian artist Ed Pien, Revel employs mylar transparencies to play with light and shadow, conjuring dreamlike imagery and traversing real, imagined, and remembered worlds. Working with papercuts, drawings, installation and video, Pien often tackles the uncanny and the mythological in his darkly fanciful projects. Pien’s installation for in/Future suggests ghostly presences—figures and narratives fail to fully materialize, and instead leave traces that drift backwards and forwards through time, exploring the myriad past and future events that come into play in the present moment.
Biography:
Ed Pien has shown work at the Drawing Centre; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; The Canadian Culture Centre, Paris; The Goethe Institute, Berlin; AGO, Toronto; Musée des beaux arts and Musée d’art contemporain, Montreal; Songzhuang Art Centre, Beijing; and the National Art Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Oboro, Montreal. He has participated in the 2000 and 2002 Montreal Biennales; the 18th Edition of the Sydney Biennale, “Oh Canada”, at MASS MoCA. Pien also presented work at the 5th Edition of the Moscow Biennale, in 2013, and at the Beijing Biennale, in 2015. His works are collected widely and include FRAC Lorraine, Metz, France; Art Gallery of Greater Victoria; The National Art Gallery of Canada; Art Gallery of Ontario; Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal.
