Hot Tickets! V.M. Bhatt Sells Out

The Asian Music Series approaches its midpoint with a sold out concert, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, at the Aga Khan Museum this Saturday. We hope you’re one of the lucky ones attending. Speaking of sold out, the May 14 performance by Kayhan Kalhor and Alireza Ghorbani is almost there too, so now’s the time if you’re keen on it.

Happily, there are still tickets for other great upcoming events. The Korean Traditional Music Association on April 29 provides a rare opportunity to hear live traditional music, and the brilliant Monsoon on May 5 brings finely crafted Indo-jazz. You can see both plus the May 20 World Fiddle Day Concert for only $40 by booking a Soul Explorer Bundle – experience all three shows and save 40%! Check out Monsoon performing “Rasa Lila” at the Burdock last month.

On Friday, at the Small World Centre, Andrew McPherson brings his stellar new band, as well as the freshly pressed vinyl of his new album, Bardo. Joined by the amazing guitar talent Nick Zubeck and his killer 3-piece, they’ll also be playing a few gems from David Bowie’s catalogue as a small tribute to the late great man.

From stage to screen – Small World has two compelling co-presentations with the Images Festival and Hot Docs coming up. Electro-Pythagoras (a portrait of Martin Bartlett) by Luke Fowler screens April 26, along with the North American premiere of Glyphs (Music from Martin’s Tape Archive). The quadraphonic concert work will be performed by Fowler and Ernst Karel. Then from May 3 to 6, we highly recommend Chavela, a documentary about one of Mexico’s greatest musical treasures, Chavela Vargas. Both gender and genre-defying, she is remembered as “la voz áspera de la ternura,” the rough voice of tenderness.
